Kathi Watkins is in the same boat as many other common workers who has had their life turned upside down by the COVID-19 pandemic. This is the story about her experience having to transition between work and home to do her job.
———————————————————————————————————————–
- I conducted a bit of research about statistics regarding how many people are still working remotely due to the pandemic but was unable to find anything that seemed like a legitimate source, so I figured I would leave it out of my story. Just one of the many flaws it has.
- I think there is some mild journalistic value with this story because this pandemic has shaken up everyone’s lives and it is important for other people to see what other perspectives are out there. Not the most newsworthy thing ever but there is a little something to gain from it in my opinion.
- I chose the person and locations I did mostly because I had no other choice. My options have been severely limited while I have been away from campus and back home.
- Locations I used were my own home in Farmington Hills and my mom’s workplace in Milford. Shots at the workplace were all taken on October 29th. Shots at my home were taken between the 29th and 30th.
- The only equipment I used was my iPhone 6s+. I used Premiere Pro to edit.
- I was very limited with options on who I was able to do any semi-decent quality story on. I had no real good ideas other than this basic COVID-related story. I figured it was sort of a different scenario and it was something I could make work for this assignment. When editing I was trying my best to use B-roll that sort of matched up with what was being said, but I only had so much to work with.
- I don’t think I learned much from this project. I have done this type of thing before so I was rather familiar with what was being asked of me to some extent. I suppose I relearned how to use Premiere since I have not used it in a while. My challenges ranged from finding a topic and finding the time and motivation to actually complete this project. I had a lot of other homework and real life things going on so I not very invested in this project until the last few days or so, leading to the rather lack luster quality. I don’t think these types of assignments are good to assign during these times. Sure, it can be good for students to go out and make their own stories and what not but these times are not suitable for that. Students already struggle enough in normal times with having the ability to go out and find people and ask them to take part in stories like this, and the pandemic definitely doesn’t make it any easier. I would have preferred to just be given lots of raw content and be able to edit it down to more focus on that side of the skills that were being tested with this assignment, if that makes sense. I know that wasn’t really the point of the assignment but that was just something I was thinking about. I just think things should be done different these days. I wish I started working on my project earlier and put more effort into it, as well as maybe getting much more B-roll or surrounding my story over a more broad or important topic, but I just tried to do the best with what I was being given.
- I am not afraid to admit that my effort was very low with this assignment. I am by no means proud of my work, and I could do far better. This semester has been getting worse and worse every single week inside/outside of school and this project just got pushed to the backburner and almost got to the point where I thought I wasn’t even going to be able to get it done, but I managed to grind it out and put something of relatively barely sorta kind of not so decent quality together. I think my end product is sorta alright but I know it does not necessarily meet all of the guidelines of the assignment, but it is what it is. I’m just glad I got it done at all. I could rant on more and more but I’ve explained the more important parts. I’d be genuinely surprised if this gets any relatively decent grade, but again I am just thrilled to have gotten it done. Here I am now realizing that I even phrased this entire reflection incorrectly and that you wanted it to be written for if someone else sees it. I would go back and change it but I don’t think anyone will ever be on my blog to see it 😦 so this is what it is. Sorry I kind of ranted a lot but I feel like students don’t get asked to express their opinion enough so I like to go into broad detail whenever I have the opportunity to reflect on assignments like this.
