———————————————————————————————————————–
This interview took place on September 24th, 2020, at the interviewee’s apartment.
The natural sounds I used were the sounds of people talking in the background, the sounds of dishes being moved, and the sounds of dishes being cleaned with water. I chose these because I wanted my story to somewhat try and immerse the listener into a restaurant environment from the employee’s point of view. Specifically, I wanted to have the listener hear a type of dining room environment, while also hearing a kitchen environment.
I gathered the dishes sound from the apartment that the interview took place in, and I gathered the vague talking noises from outside of my own apartment.
I had 2 interviewees prior to finding this one that both had canceled on me. I had a good idea as to what I wanted my story to be about, so as a last resort I had asked a couple of my friends if they had any friends working in the restaurant business that would have something to say about their job related to the pandemic, and luckily one of them did.
I don’t think I learned much from this project other than how useful NAT sound can really be. I liked integrating it into my own story, regardless of if I liked what I was producing or not. Somethings that didn’t go well were coming up with sound ideas and finding a person to interview. People don’t typically care about helping you with your project if there is no benefit to them. It can be hard to find a subject who is relatively committed to putting themselves in an awkward situation where they are being interviewed by a stranger for no benefit of their own. I will never be a fan of it and think assignments like these should be done much differently. If I could redo the story I would probably try and find some topic that I could integrate better sounds into, as I was not too pleased with what I came up with for this one.
